AVID EDITING NOTES

MOTION EFFECTS

THERE ARE THREE TYPES:
1. FREEZE FRAME
2. MOTION
3. TIMEWARP

HOW TO MAKE A FREEZE FRAME

1. Load a clip and mark a selection
2. Park on the frame you want
3. Go to Clip – Freeze Frame (and possibly Two Field Freeze Frame)
4. Use both fields when you don’t have Two Fields.

TWO FIELD – INTERPOLITATED

Loss of Vertical Resolution, but it’s great and there is no jitter.

SLO-MO’S AND OTHER MOTION EFFECTS

1. Don’t choose duplicated fields (it’ll be Choppy)
2. Don’t choose Both Fields (not smooth enough either)
3. INTERPOLATED FIELDS- throws away both fields (the 2’s) and creates a new image of both one fields that are left over. (Much more smooth)
4. Work in the Source Monitor and go to the Fast Menu to open the Motion Effects.
5. If you have ODD FRAME RATES, to work around it, make the frame rate an even divider of 36, 60, 90 and so on.
6. DON’T JUST DO FIT TO FILL’S. You can, but it’ll be much more smooth if you make the rate an even divider.
7. Go to Settings – Render and Motion Effects Render Using – Interpolated Fields and OK.

TO CHANGE THE MOTION EFFECTS RENDER SETTINGS, click on the clip and change the setting and render it

YOU CAN TRIM AND ADD TO A MOTION EFFECT

SLO-MO’S ARE DONE IN THE SOURCE MONITOR AND ARE MADE AS NEW CLIPS.

There is a BUG though, if you go past the line (making it a freeze frame), it may not render.

TIMEWARP

This is done in the timeline. The effect is located in Motion Effects or Timewarp. Drop the effect onto a clip and then click Effect Mode or click the Motion Effect Button and then move the Motion Effect Editor window to the left monitor. There are two graphics to use and I need to lick on Speed and position the graphs to pen them and stretch them out to make them bigger. Then concentrate on Speed Graph and Edit Graph chooses which one.

100% - Normal and 0% is a Freeze Frame. When I go below 0%, it will go in reverse

The black area is the duration of the shot in the Timeline and it’s all the available frames of the clip

If the Green Line goes out of the top or the bottom line in the Position Graph, it will become a freeze frame (you run out of available frames)

IF I HOLD APPLE + OPTION and drag, you can move around in the GRAPH AREA.

Make sure you choose how you want to render it and do it

RENDERING OUT A TIMEWARP

Blended Interpolated- (Field Blending). RECOMMENDED CHOICE.

Fluid Motion- converts the image to motion vectors and takes a long time to render. This is great to use when you slow something way down. This doesn’t make a separate clip. This is done in the timeline.

In the Speed Graph, if you click the Fast Menu, you can change things that will affect the movement

For Instantaneous rate changes, choose SHELF.

Choosing Spline-

TIME WARP IS ONLY FOR VIDEO & DOES NOT AFFECT THE AUDIO

FIXED KEYFRAMES is the Default
• They are fixed in time and DO NOT change.
• If you trim your clip, the keyframes don’t move
• ELASTIC KEYFRAMES will move proportionally if you alter the clip

RENDER SETTINGS has a Timewarp default and can be changed. Default is original preference. The Recommended is BLENDED INTERPOLATED.

TRIM TO FILL

1. This is located under the Timewarp FX
2. The First and Last frame will never change, so if you trim it loner, it’ll get slow and if you make your clip shorter, it’ll go faster.
3. This the Timewarp’s version of Fit to Fill.

IF I WANT TO MAKE A MOTION EFFECT I NEED TO MARK AND IN AND OUT POINT IN THE SOURCE WINDOW AND THEN CLICK ON THE MOTION EFFECT BUTTON, which should be under the Source Window or mapped to a key. When I click on it and window opens which lets me affect the parameters. ALWAYS use even numbers when entering in an amount. If I do a slow-mo and it's a decibel number or a number like 27, change it to the closest even number. If I'm working in a 30 FPS project, I should try to do my effects in 10 fps, 15, 20 25.

I need to decide what kind of motion effect it's going to be by selecting how to Render 2-Field Motion Effect I am going to use.

DUPLICATED FIELDS is going to throw away every other field and just work with field #1. This will throw away some of the resolution of the image. This is great for just preview purposes but definitely not for the final version.

BOTH FIELDS will keep both of the fields which will make it look better, but with certain types of images such as fast motion will look jittery. This is good with images that aren't really moving much in the shot. Such as an exterior shot of a building and I need to do a slo-mo to extend the shot.

INTERPOLATED FIELDS will look at the whole range and pick the fields that will then combine from different frames and make the smoothest motion possible. It is smoother than Both Fields and sharper then Duplicated Fields.

VTR-STYLE plays field one and then field two like using an old-school jog wheel. It will be sharp but may have a little horizontal jitter in it. The slower the slo-mo I do with this I will notice it and will probably want to use Interpolated Fields. This is a good choice for half speed stuff.

When doing faster speed effects the following choices don't really matter as much as when doing slo-mo's.

I have a choice to either just click Create or Create and Render. If I click Create it's going to play it back in real-time w/o rendering and it will ALWAYS play back as Duplicated Fields. This is a good choice for previewing but not a good choice for finishing.

If I'm working at 24 fps I won't get all the choices above, I will only have a progressive render choice.

DOING A FIT-TO-FILL EDIT

Set my in and out points in both my source clip and timeline clips. Select the proper video/audio tracks. I will need to map the Fit-to-
Fill button to either the interface on the Source side or to a key. It's in the Edit Tab of the Command Palette. Click on the key and it will build the effect in the Source Window and it will automatically fit it into the space in the timeline. I can also trim the edit if it's not perfect.

TIMEWARP (EFFECT WHICH ALREADY HAS SOME PRE-MADE EFFECTS)

The 0%-100% effect being dropped on a clip is an interesting effect that blends the clip to go from a still until it's at normal speed.

100%-0% will start at full speed and then become a still frame.

Trim to Fill is good if I've already cut in a shot and it doesn't quite match and I need to make the shot longer without affecting the in frame or out frame (GREAT FOR A LONGER VO REDO). When I drop it on to the clip it will be at 100%. Go into the trim mode by lassoing the end of the clip and the beginning of the next clip and making the shot longer. It's going to keep the exact same in and out point, but it's going to slow the shot down to make it fit.
